Is two days really enough?
Yes, if you plan around the flights. The morning flight from Bali lands in Labuan Bajo before midday, which leaves most of day one free. Day two is either spent on the boat until the afternoon, or on a full day trip that returns before the evening flight. In both cases you see the main sights of the park.
What you give up is the slow pace. There is little time for an overland day or for a second boat trip. Guests who can add a third night usually do, because it makes the return flight relaxed and leaves room for a sunset on the hill. For a short break from Bali, though, two days works well.
Day 1 morning: fly Bali to Labuan Bajo
Take the earliest flight you can. Flights from Ngurah Rai airport reach Komodo Airport in about one hour, and the airport is about ten minutes by car from the harbour. With a morning departure you can be at the pier or at your hotel well before lunch, with the whole afternoon ahead of you.
Pack light and keep a day bag with swimwear, sunscreen, a hat and your passport, because on the sailing option you go straight from the airport to the boat. Let your operator know your flight number when you book, so the pickup driver is waiting when you land and the boat is ready to leave.
Option A: 2D1N sailing trip from the airport
The sailing option fits two days best. The boat leaves Labuan Bajo around midday on day one, after your pickup from the airport, and reaches the first islands by early afternoon. Depending on the route, the first day covers Kelor Island, Rinca or Komodo for the dragon trek, and a sunset at Kalong Island, where thousands of fruit bats fly out at dusk.
You sleep on board in a quiet bay. Day two starts with sunrise on Padar, then Pink Beach, Manta Point and Taka Makassar, with lunch on deck. The boat is back in the harbour by mid-afternoon, which leaves time for a shower at the office or a cafe before an evening flight to Bali. Sailing trips start from IDR 3,500,000 per person.
Option B: day trip plus a hotel night
If you prefer a bed on land, book a hotel for night one and a speedboat day trip for day two. Day one is relaxed: check in, walk along the harbour, and watch the sunset from Love Hill or Sylvia Hill. The day trip leaves around six the next morning and covers Padar, Komodo Island, Pink Beach, Manta Point and Taka Makassar.
The speedboat returns to Labuan Bajo by late afternoon, so this option needs an evening flight back to Bali. Check the flight schedule before you book the boat, and tell your operator your departure time so the route can be timed to the airport. Day trips start from IDR 1,500,000 per person including lunch, guide and gear.
Day 2 afternoon: flying back to Bali
The return flight is where the timing matters. Boats are back in the harbour in the mid to late afternoon, and the airport is ten minutes away, so an evening flight gives a comfortable margin. Your guide can drop you at the airport directly from the pier, and the small terminal means check-in and security are quick.
If the only flights back are earlier in the day, the better plan is to add one night and fly the following morning. This also opens up the evening for dinner on the waterfront. Either way, allow a sensible gap between stepping off the boat and your flight, and keep your travel documents in your day bag rather than in the hold.
Booking the two days with Arah Pesona
