The route
Leaving from Labuan Bajo, the boat spends the first part of the journey inside Komodo National Park. Typical stops include Padar for the viewpoint hike, a dragon walk with a ranger, Pink Beach and snorkelling sites where manta rays are sometimes seen.
The boat then heads west along the Sumbawa coast. The two best-known stops here are Saleh Bay and Moyo Island, before the final stretch to Lombok. Trips starting in Lombok follow the same route in reverse and finish in Labuan Bajo.
Whale sharks in Saleh Bay
Saleh Bay in Sumbawa is known for whale sharks that gather around the fishing platforms, called bagan, in the early morning.
These are wild animals. Sightings are frequent but depend on the fishermen's catch, the weather and the season, so they cannot be guaranteed.
Moyo Island
Moyo Island lies off the north coast of Sumbawa. The usual stop is a short walk through forest to a waterfall with freshwater pools, a welcome change after days of salt water.
Four boat classes
Boats on this route are grouped into four classes: Standard, Deluxe, Luxury and Luxury Plus. The route is broadly the same, and the difference lies in the sleeping arrangements, bathrooms, air conditioning and the space on board.
Standard boats are simple, and it is worth asking exactly how you will sleep before you book. Higher classes offer private cabins. Arah Pesona Trip, a locally owned operator with an office in Labuan Bajo, can explain which boats run on your dates.
Sea conditions and onward travel
Departures may be delayed or rerouted when the harbour authority considers conditions unsafe.
Arrival times are approximate. Plan onward flights for the day after arrival, not the same day.
